Commissioner Lam’s statement
regarding Atlanta

March 17, 2021

The shootings that took place in Atlanta last night are horrific. Out of the 8 victims, 6 were Asian women. My sincere condolences to the families of the victims. This tragedy occurred during a year of increased violence against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI).

Although details around the shooting are still coming in, hate crimes are undeniably permeating and on the rise in the country. This tragedy has hit me personally and I must speak out. As a mother and AAPI woman leader, my heart aches. The victims were daughters, mothers, workers, community members – their stories must not be forgotten.

For far too long,  the experiences of AAPI women and communities have been invisible. Collectively we must stand in unity to condemn hate so violent attacks don’t continue. These forces of bigotry, violence against women, and brutality have no place in our world.

For our AAPI community members and students who are feeling the weight of these incidents or are feeling unheard, please know that I am with you during these trying times and we will get through this together.

I am committed to working with SFUSD and providing the necessary resources and support to address anti-Asian racism and truly fulfill our vision of ensuring every student feels safe and nurtured.
